How to Open WhatsApp Photo Gallery

Short answer: WhatsApp has no single photo gallery. To open your WhatsApp photo gallery, use the Media tab inside a chat, or open the WhatsApp Images album in your phone's Gallery or Photos app. On iPhone, turn on Save to Camera Roll. On Android, turn on Media visibility.

People search for a WhatsApp photo gallery because every photo they were sent is somewhere on the phone, but nobody can find it. Where to look depends on your phone and on two or three settings. This guide shows where your WhatsApp gallery is on Android and iPhone, how to fix photos that are missing, and what to do when you want the good ones in one shared place.

Where is the WhatsApp photo gallery?

WhatsApp does not have a gallery of its own that joins all your chats. Your photos live in three places, and you open the WhatsApp photo gallery by choosing the right one.

Open WhatsApp photo gallery: three places to look1. Inside WhatsAppChat nameMedia, links and docsOne chat at a time2. Phone folderWhatsApp ImagesFiles app on AndroidAll chats together3. Gallery or PhotosAlbums on AndroidRecents on iPhoneNeeds saving turned on
    1. Inside WhatsApp: every chat has a Media tab with the photos from that chat only.
    2. In a phone folder: WhatsApp saves what you receive into a WhatsApp Images folder on Android, or into the Camera Roll on iPhone.
    3. In your Gallery or Photos app: photos only show up here when WhatsApp is allowed to save them to the phone.

Open WhatsApp photo gallery inside WhatsApp

This works the same on every phone and shows one chat at a time.

    1. Open the chat or group.
    2. Tap the name at the top.
    3. Tap Media, links and docs, then Media.
    4. Tap any photo and swipe to move through the chat's photos.

To see which chats use the most space, open WhatsApp Settings, then Storage and data, then Manage storage.

Open WhatsApp photo gallery on Android

    1

    Open the WhatsApp Images album

Open your Gallery or Google Photos app and go to Albums (Library in Google Photos). Look for WhatsApp Images. Videos sit in WhatsApp Video. This album combines photos from every chat that WhatsApp has saved to your phone.

    2

Or open the folder in the Files app

Open Files, then Internal storage, Android, media, com.whatsapp, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Images. On Android 10 and older, the path is Internal storage, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Images. Photos you sent yourself are in a Sent folder inside it. WhatsApp Business keeps its own folder.

    3

Turn on Media visibility if the album is missing

In WhatsApp tap the three dots, then Settings, Chats, and switch on Media visibility. For one chat, open the chat, tap its name, tap Media visibility and choose Yes or Default. Menu names can differ slightly between WhatsApp versions.

    4

Give WhatsApp permission to see photos

Open your phone Settings, then Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions, and allow Photos and videos (or Storage on older phones).

Open WhatsApp photo gallery on iPhone

    1

Turn on Save to Camera Roll

In WhatsApp open Settings, then Chats, and switch on Save to Camera Roll. For one chat, open the chat, tap its name, tap Save to Camera Roll and choose Default, Always or Never.

    2

    Allow WhatsApp to add photos

Open the iPhone Settings app, then Privacy and Security, Photos, WhatsApp. Choose Add Photos Only or All Photos. Without this, WhatsApp cannot save anything.

    3

Open Photos and look in Recents

WhatsApp does not make its own album on iPhone. New photos appear in the Photos app under Recents, next to your camera photos. Only photos received after you switched the setting on are saved automatically. Older ones need to be saved by hand from the chat.

WhatsApp photos not showing in gallery: quick fixes

If you followed the steps and your WhatsApp gallery is still empty or missing photos, find your case below.

Media visibility or Save to Camera Roll is off. Turn it on in WhatsApp Settings, Chats, then open the album again.
WhatsApp cannot access photos. Allow Photos and videos for WhatsApp in your phone settings.
The photo shows a download arrow. Tap the arrow, or check Settings, Storage and data, Media auto-download so photos download on Wi-Fi or mobile data.
The photo is gone or says it is no longer available. Ask the sender to send it again. Expired and deleted-for-everyone photos cannot be recovered from the chat.
It was a View once photo or sent with disappearing messages. View once photos cannot be saved, and disappearing messages vanish after the time that was set.
The album is hidden in your Gallery app. On some phones, open Albums, tap the menu and choose Hide or unhide albums, then show WhatsApp Images.
Your phone storage is full. Free some space. New photos cannot be saved to a full phone.
The Gallery has not refreshed. Restart the phone so the Gallery scans the folder again.

WhatsApp photo gallery download: save photos you want to keep

Photos can expire or disappear, so save the important ones now. Open the photo in the chat, tap the menu or the Share icon, and choose Save. You can also star a photo so it stays in Starred messages. Remember that WhatsApp compresses photos before they reach you, so a saved copy is smaller than the original. If a photo matters, ask the sender to send it again as a Document.

When a phone gallery is not enough

Your phone gallery only shows what is on your phone, mixed with forwards and good morning pictures, and nobody else in the family sees it. If you want the best WhatsApp photos in one shared place, save them into a private Circle and an Event in Memoria, the Social Memory app. Memoria is not a backup app and it does not replace your gallery. It is where the photos worth keeping go, together with the people who were there.

Create a Circle for the people, such as your family or college friends.
Add an Event for the moment, such as Diwali at home or a Goa trip.
Save the keepers from the WhatsApp folder on Android or from the Camera Roll on iPhone.

Read how it works in WhatsApp Photo Gallery in Memoria, or see the longer clean-up method in how to rescue your WhatsApp photos.

    Frequently asked questions

Where is the WhatsApp photo gallery on Android?

Open your Gallery or Google Photos app, go to Albums (Library in Google Photos) and look for WhatsApp Images. You can also open the Files app and go to Internal storage, Android, media, com.whatsapp, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Images. On Android 10 and older the path is Internal storage, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Images.

How do I open my WhatsApp photo gallery on iPhone?

Turn on Save to Camera Roll in WhatsApp (Settings, Chats), then open the Photos app and look in Recents. WhatsApp does not create its own album on iPhone, so its photos sit together with your camera photos. Only photos received after you turn the setting on are saved automatically.

Can I see all my WhatsApp photos from every chat in one place?

Not inside WhatsApp, which shows photos one chat at a time. On Android the WhatsApp Images album in your Gallery combines photos from all chats, and on iPhone they appear in Photos once Save to Camera Roll is on. Photos that were never saved to the phone will not appear there.

Why are my WhatsApp photos not showing in the gallery?

The usual causes are Media visibility (Android) or Save to Camera Roll (iPhone) being off, WhatsApp missing permission to access photos, photos that were never downloaded, a hidden album in your Gallery app, or a full phone. Each fix is listed in the section on photos not showing in the gallery above.

Does WhatsApp save photos in full quality?

No. WhatsApp compresses photos it sends, so the copy you receive is smaller than the original. If the sender shares the photo as a Document instead of a photo, WhatsApp sends the file as it is, which keeps the original quality.

Can I get back old WhatsApp photos that are gone?

Only if they are still on your phone, still in the chat, or included in a chat backup you can restore. Photos that expired or were deleted for everyone cannot be downloaded again. Ask the sender to send them again, and save the ones you want to keep.
