How to price wedding photography in India, step by step

Knowing how to price wedding photography starts with your costs, not with what other studios charge. Wedding photographer pricing in India varies a lot by city, brand and season, so a copied price can leave you working for too little. Work out your own floor first, then decide how far above it you can go.

    1. List every event and the hours each photographer will work.
    2. Count the edited photos you will deliver and how long editing really takes you.
    3. Add the team, travel, album, gear and delivery costs for this one wedding.
    4. Choose a profit margin that keeps the studio healthy through slow months.
    5. Add GST if you charge it, and write the result into your wedding photography package.

Do this for each wedding photography package you sell, such as a one-day package and a full three-event package, and keep the working so you can explain the price to a couple. Wedding photographer pricing is easier to defend when every line has a reason.

How the wedding photography pricing calculator works

The calculator is plain arithmetic, so you can check every step.

    1. Shoot cost = events x photographers x hours x shoot rate. With the starting numbers that is 36 hours and ₹36,000.
    2. Editing cost = photos delivered / photos edited per hour x editing cost. That is 25 hours and ₹12,500.
    3. Other costs = assistants for each event + travel + album + gear + delivery software + anything else. That is ₹21,300.
    4. Total cost = shoot + editing + other costs. That is ₹69,800.
    5. Price before GST = total cost / (1 - margin). A 30% margin means you keep 30% of the price, so the price is ₹99,714.
    6. Price with GST = price before GST + GST at your rate, which is ₹1,17,663.

We divide by (1 - margin) because a margin is a share of the price. Adding 30% on top of cost would give a smaller margin than you intended.

    Costs photographers often forget

When you are learning how to price wedding photography, these are the costs that slip through. Wedding photographer pricing goes wrong when they are missing, and every wedding photography package should cover them.

    • Editing hours. They can be as long as the shoot or longer, and they are easy to leave out when you price by event.
    • Delivery and storage. Large galleries need space for months or years. Check the wedding photo storage calculator and the software pricing guide.
    • Backups. A second drive and a second copy cost money and are part of delivering safely.
    • Revisions and reshoots. Decide how many rounds of changes are included, and put it in the contract.
    • Tax and payment fees. GST, if you are registered, and any fees your bank or payment app charges.
    • Slow months. A healthy margin pays for the weeks without bookings.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I price wedding photography in India?▾

Start from your own costs, not from what others charge. Add the hours you shoot, the hours you edit, your team, travel, album, gear and delivery costs. Then add the profit margin you need and, if you are registered, GST. The result is the lowest package price that still pays you properly. Your city, brand and demand then decide how far above it you can go.

Is this the market rate for wedding photographers?▾

No. The calculator does not know market rates and shows none. It shows the minimum price that covers your own costs and margin, using the numbers you type in. The values filled in at the start are examples so you can see how it works. Replace every one of them with your own.

What profit margin should I use?▾

There is no right number for everyone. The margin is the share of your price (before GST) that you keep after paying for time, team and costs. Try 20, 30 and 40 to see how the price moves, and choose what keeps your studio healthy through slow months.

    Should the price include GST?▾

That depends on whether you are registered. The GST rate box starts at 18 as an example only. Ask your accountant which rate applies to your services and whether you must register, and enter 0 if you do not charge GST.

How do I count editing time?▾

Enter how many photos you will deliver and how many you can edit in an hour. Editing often takes longer than the shoot, so be honest about your own speed. If you outsource editing, use the editing cost per hour that you actually pay.

What is the effective hourly rate?▾

It is the money left after non-time costs, divided by all the hours you work on the wedding, shooting and editing together. If it is lower than you expected, the package price is too low for the hours it takes.

Where do delivery and storage costs fit?▾

Add them under delivery software and storage per wedding. A wedding of 3,000 photos at about 5 MB each is roughly 15 GB, and our wedding photo storage calculator and software pricing guide show how plans compare.

Does this calculator save my numbers?▾

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Use the copy button to keep a summary.
